The media has a powerful role in shaping public opinion and influencing political decisions. However, there has been growing concern over the influence of foreign governments, such as Russia and the United States, in shaping media narratives. In this article, we will explore the unpublished report by the Columbia Journalism Review, which sheds light on how Russia and the US influence the media.
In today’s fast-paced world, it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between fact and fiction, particularly when it comes to the media. The article, “Russia and the US Press: The Article the CJR Didn’t Publish,” sheds light on how these two countries influence the media in their favour. While the article provides valuable insights, I believe that there is more to the story.

The Role of Russia in the Media
Russia has been accused of manipulating the media to sway public opinion in its favour. From its involvement in the annexation of Crimea, and the 2016 US Presidential election to its continued military aggression of Ukraine, the Russian government has been accused of using propaganda to influence the media. According to a report by the US Senate Intelligence Committee, Russian operatives used social media to create and amplify divisive content during the 2016 election. While these allegations remain controversial, it is clear that Russia has a significant presence in the media landscape.
The Role of the US in the Media
While the US is often viewed as a bastion of free speech and democracy, it too has been accused of manipulating the media. The US government has a history of using propaganda to influence public opinion, from the Cold War era to the present day. The US has also been accused of suppressing information that it deems unfavourable, particularly when it comes to national security issues.
The CJR Article
The unpublished article by the Columbia Journalism Review sheds light on how both Russia and the US use their influence to manipulate the media. The article highlights the role of social media in spreading propaganda and the tactics used by both countries to sway public opinion. While the article is informative, I believe that there is more to the story.
The Importance of Independent Media
In today’s world, independent media is more important than ever. With so much misinformation and propaganda floating around, it is crucial to have trusted sources of information. Independent media outlets, such as the CJR, play a vital role in holding those in power accountable and providing unbiased information to the public.
The article, “Russia and the US Press: The Article the CJR Didn’t Publish,” provides valuable insights into how these two countries manipulate the media to their advantage. However, there is more to the story. By understanding the role of independent media and the tactics used by both Russia and the US, we can begin to create a more informed and just society.
As I dive deeper into the topic of media manipulation, it is important to recognize that this issue is not limited to just Russia and the US. Countries all over the world use similar tactics to control the narrative and sway public opinion. However, it is important to note that not all media outlets are created equal. Some, like the CJR, prioritize transparency and accuracy, while others prioritize sensationalism and clickbait.
In addition to media outlets, social media platforms also play a significant role in shaping public opinion. Facebook, Twitter, and other social media giants have been criticized for their handling of fake news and propaganda. While these companies have taken steps to combat this issue, there is still much work to be done.
One way to combat media manipulation is through media literacy. By educating the public on how to identify fake news and propaganda, we can empower people to make informed decisions. This education should start in schools and continue throughout one’s life, as the tactics used to manipulate the media are constantly evolving.
While the article provided by the CJR sheds light on the issue of media manipulation, it is important to recognize that this issue is much larger than just Russia and the US. By understanding the tactics used by those in power to control the narrative, and by prioritizing independent media and media literacy, we can create a more informed and just society.
